The Fairy of Kournas Lake

The lake has many legends surrounding it due to its dark water.

There used to be no lake in this place, but a man from the village used to walk here regularly with his daughter, who was enchantingly beautiful, almost unearthly. It happened once that the girl, tired of the walk, sat down on a stone, gazing pensively at the mountains and humming as she combed her golden hair. As she sat there, her father admired her more and more, but suddenly, as if the devil had bewitched him, he felt a love for his daughter.

The girl, noticing her father's unmistakable approach, tried to escape from his embrace, and in her dismay cried out in horror: "Come, water spirit! " Then the earth cracked and water flooded the area. The roaring waters engulfed the girl. The girl was taken under the protection of the spirits of the lake, who have lived at the bottom of the bottomless lake in the underwater realm ever since.

Anyone who believes the story can see the nymph at night, sitting on a stone in the lake's water in the bright moonlight, pondering and humming, softly combing her golden hair long and softly. She is said to be the guardian of the lake and the animals that live there.
