Getting There & Away: Navigating the Path to Adventure

You have several options to reach the trailhead in Omalos which is located approximately 40 kilometers from Chania. However, be prepared for a somewhat complex journey, and consider joining an organized excursion for a smoother experience. After a 40-kilometer bus ride, you'll find yourself standing high above the entrance to Samaria Gorge, ready to begin your adventure. (The temperature in Omalos can be 5-10 degrees lower than in Chania.)

At the end of the hike, you'll arrive at the coastal village of Agia Roumeli, where no road connects. Your options for departure are either hiking back or, more practically, taking a ferry to the south coast port of Chora Sfakia. From there, KTEL buses will be waiting to transport you back to Chania, approximately an hour and a half away. The ferries operate multiple times daily, depending on the season, and often make stops at Loutro, a charming fishing village with delightful tavernas and cozy hotels. Make sure to check the ferry schedule to plan your return accordingly.

Pro Tip

Pre-Hike Accommodation: It's advisable to stay in Chania, the closest city to the trailhead, before embarking on your hike. This allows for a shorter travel distance and ensures you can reach Xyloskalo early, giving you a head start compared to hikers coming from Heraklion or other locations.

Guided Excursions: Simplify Your Journey

For a hassle-free experience, consider joining a guided excursion that takes care of all the logistics, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the beauty of the hike. By signing up for an organized tour, you'll have the advantage of arriving at the Xyloskalo trailhead before the public buses, ensuring a head-start and avoiding crowds.

Don't worry about being part of a large group, as everyone hikes at their own pace. Guides will handle the purchase of your park entrance and ferry tickets, and they will typically follow the last hiker, ensuring the group navigates the trail, which is not always clearly marked, without any issues.

Different sections or stages of the Samaria Gorge hike

The Samaria Gorge hike is divided into different sections or stages, each offering its own unique experience. Let's explore the breakdown of these sections and stages to help you plan your hike in the magnificent Samaria Gorge of Crete.

Trail Description: Unveiling the Magnificence of Samaria Gorge

Begin your hike at the trailhead and park the entrance booth near the renowned Xyloskalo restaurant, situated at an elevation of 1230 meters beneath the majestic limestone peak of Gingilos. The trail spans 18 kilometers, gradually descending as it takes you from the mountain views at the start to the shores of the Libyan Sea in the coastal village of Agia Roumeli.

Descending through Steep Switchbacks and Scenic Landscapes

As you start your descent, marvel at the panoramic mountain views before you. The trail takes you through a series of steep switchbacks, constructed during Ottoman times and equipped with handrails in the steepest sections for your safety. During this 3 kilometers stretch, you'll pass by the charming Agios Nikolaos chapel. While your knees might feel the strain, the gradient eases as you enter the heart of the gorge.

Crossing the River and Exploring the Abandoned Settlement

Samaria Village

Samaria village, nestled in the remote and mountainous region of Crete, is a hidden gem waiting to be explored. Located in the heart of the Samaria Gorge, it serves as a resting point for hikers making their way down from Omalos. Despite its deserted state since 1962, when the area was declared a National Park, Samaria village holds historical significance and cultural heritage.

The traditional way of life in Samaria village was centered around occupations such as woodcutting and beekeeping. The village's abandoned houses have been partially restored and now serve as facilities for the gorge authorities. One house functions as a guards' post, another as a doctor's office, and the old olive mill house is an information kiosk displaying old pictures and folk art exhibits.

Encountering the Majestic "Gates of Samaria"

Reaching the halfway point, the valley expands into an impressive spectacle. But soon, it narrows dramatically, leading you through a passage known as the "Gates of Samaria." Here, the canyon walls tower above, with barely 3-4 meters separating them, creating a breathtaking sight as they soar upward for about 300 meters.

Exiting the Gorge and Reaching Agia Roumeli

Around 14 kilometers, marked by yellow signs every kilometer, you'll exit the gorge and arrive at the outlying buildings of the "old" Agia Roumeli, located approximately 1,5 kilometers up the valley from the coast. You'll know you've reached this point when you see a café offering refreshing drinks like fresh orange juice, chilled beers, and ice cream. If you're feeling exhausted, there's a minibus (2 €/person) available here to transport you to the village.

The end of the Samaria Gorge, where a restaurant awaits tourists.

If you choose to continue your journey, keep an eye out for the ruined hilltop castle on your right, accessible via a side trail. From there, it's just another 2 kilometers to reach the coastal hamlet of "new" Agia Roumeli. Most hikers arrive here in the midafternoon, covered in sweat and dust. Take some time to relax on the beautiful black-sand beach and rejuvenate your tired feet in the warm and crystal-clear waters.

This serene location offers one of the best spots in Greece for a refreshing swim. You'll also find free showers, tavernas serving delicious homemade food and refreshing drinks, as well as simple accommodations for those who wish to stay overnight.

The end of the Samaria Gorge, where a sign awaits weary travelers

In bad, windy weather, you can easily get stuck in the village, as the ferry is not running. This is what happened to us, so we spent an extra 1 night in this lovely village.

Pro Tips

Try the Calypso restaurant. They are a very nice family and their food is excellent.

Swimwear: Don't forget to pack swimwear for a refreshing dip in the sea at the end of the hike. Additionally, you may want to bring flip-flops or sandals for beach use, although they can also be purchased at the shops in Agia Roumeli.
